Recent cases

Raffia recently represented a husband subject to a forced marriage protection order made against him at Birmingham County Court. There were 12 respondents in total (all of family). She successfully discharged the forced marriage protection orders for all family members.

Raffia also recently represented a husband at a preliminary hearing as to whether assets subject to trust were matrimonial or not. This was a Muslim family, and the assets had been given in charity to the local mosque.

Another recent case dealt with forced marriage protection orders and nullity. The client, who was 16 years old, was taken on holiday to Pakistan and forced into marriage. Her mother then left her in Pakistan for four months before she convinced family members to bring her back to the UK. The client was threatened by family members throughout the court proceedings. Due to the nature of the circumstances, Raffia was successful in obtaining indefinite orders for the client.

Recommendations

"Has advised and represented on cases with an Asian cultural dimension. Her insight and thorough approach is well received by clients. Confident and eloquent, Raffia exudes a natural authority and sharp intellect, coupled with vitality and enthusiasm that is as effective at a lecture as it is in the court room"
